At best this keeps people at a distance from each other, but at its worst it leads to discrimination and even violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But of course, <strong>this is nothing new<\/strong>. For example, you may have noticed from our stories that in Jesus\u2019 day, the Jews and Samaritans didn\u2019t get along.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>But why?<\/strong><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Some might compare the hostility between these two people groups to a \u201c<strong>sibling rivalry.<\/strong>\u201d They came from the same roots and had a lot in common, but over time, racial, political and religious differences drove them apart. By Jesus\u2019 time, the hostility between these two groups had gone on for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Samaritans<\/strong>\u2019 ancestry is not completely clear, but generally it is believed they descended from Jews in the northern region of Israel who had intermarried with and been influenced by foreigners. They shared many of the same religious beliefs as the southern Jews, but did not accept all of the Hebrew Scriptures as authoritative. Of course, both the Samaritans and Jews believed their own group was right. These differences, along with several incidents of conflict throughout their history, meant that by Jesus\u2019 time, Jews and Samaritans mostly avoided each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Jesus, though, was different.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cross-Cultural-Jesus-01.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Cross-Cultural-Jesus-01&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; align=&#8221;center&#8221; width=&#8221;75%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;75%&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On more than one occasion, <strong>Jesus<\/strong> went through Samaritan territories that most of his fellow Jews would have stayed away from. When his disciples angrily condemned Samaritans who rejected them, Jesus showed forgiveness and good will (as seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/project\/thunder-bros-1\/\">\u201cThunder Bros\u201d<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus, in his teachings, often told <strong>stories<\/strong> to make a point. In one story he used a Samaritan as a good example of showing love to others. This is where we get the expression <strong>\u201cGood Samaritan,\u201d<\/strong> an oxymoron to Jesus\u2019 fellow Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in the story of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/project\/well1\/\">\u201cthe Well,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> we see Jesus showing kindness and acceptance to a Samaritan woman and her village. This conversation was especially boundary-breaking: In that time and culture, for a man and a woman who were neither married nor family to have a private conversation like this would have been questionable. For anyone who knew her past and reputation, it would have been considered even more inappropriate. And of course, talking to a Samaritan, much less eating or drinking with one, would have been shocking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cross-Cultural-Jesus-02.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Cross-Cultural-Jesus-02&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; align=&#8221;center&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;70%&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet Jesus did all of these things, broke all of these boundaries, and showed respect and acceptance to the woman at the well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Through Jesus, we can see God\u2019s love for us. All of us.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter your race or cultural background, Jesus loves you. No matter how you\u2019ve failed, Jesus offers to forgive you. No matter what other people think of you, Jesus accepts you.<br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The question is, how will you respond? <\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The woman at the well received God\u2019s love through Jesus and let it change her.
