In Waypoints<\/strong> season 2, one of our stories was called \u201cBread Alone<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d illustrated by Masiu<\/strong>. This manga was adapted from a story found in the Bible (Luke 10:38-42<\/a>) and features a character named Martha.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n In this story, Martha is really stressed out!<\/strong> She feels pulled in different directions trying to be the perfect host, to do what\u2019s right for Jesus. Meanwhile her sister Mary sits at Jesus\u2019 feet, listening to him teach. Martha is critical of Mary for not helping her, and eventually loses her cool.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n But as is often the case with the Bible\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n One BIG thing that modern readers easily miss here is that, actually, Mary is breaking social and cultural norms here. In first century Jewish society, women didn\u2019t normally socialize with men in this way. The outer room, where Jesus and his disciples sat, was for the men. Women, in this situation, belonged in the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2023-06_bread1b.jpg” title_text=”2023-06_bread1b” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”76%” width_tablet=”76%” width_phone=”100%” width_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n But there\u2019s another norm that Mary is breaking here:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n To sit at Jesus\u2019 feet is to take on the posture of a disciple<\/strong>. In that society, women couldn\u2019t be disciples or rabbis (teachers) \u2014 to \u201csit at the feet of\u201d a rabbi meant to be his disciple, possibly becoming a rabbi yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n So, culturally speaking, Mary was breaking the rules, and Martha was right to be upset. And Martha expected Jesus to take her side.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n But instead, Jesus said, <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2023-06_bread1c.jpg” title_text=”2023-06_bread1c” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”64%” width_tablet=”72%” width_phone=”100%” width_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n He<\/span> affirmed Mary\u2019s right to be there, with the men, as a fellow disciple. This would have been huge at the time \u2014 scandalous, even.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n But this is very much in-character for Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n In the Bible, throughout Jesus\u2019 story, we see Him cross man-made barriers again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>We have highlighted this multiple times in Waypoints too: Jesus showing compassion for an enemy (Centurion<\/a>), accepting traitor as his disciple (What Else Could I Do?<\/a>), speaking truth with kindness to someone from another culture (The Well<\/a>), taking time for a sick and lonely person (A Desperate Woman<\/a>), and showing a child he can play an important role (A Place at the Table<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Jesus accepted, gave honor and dignity to those the culture of his day did not\u2026 including women.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n We don\u2019t know how Martha, Mary or the others in the room reacted to Jesus\u2019 words<\/span> here<\/span>. <\/span>The Bible doesn\u2019t tell us. <\/span>In our manga, we ended the story with some of the men volunteering to help in the kitchen, then everyone happily enjoying the meal together.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/www.waypoints.jp\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2023-06_bread1d.jpg” title_text=”2023-06_bread1d” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”78%” width_tablet=”86%” width_phone=”100%” width_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n Realistically, that\u2019s probably NOT what happened.
